Elderberry products are popping up everywhere as the interest in this little berry full of goodness has been increasing. Pinterest has reported that interest in Elderberry products, information and recipes is a trending topic for 2019. The increased interest seems to follow the trend of people looking for natural solutions to improve health conditions.
It's nothing new though because Elderberry has been used in folk medicine around the world for hundreds of years. In ancient times, Hippocrates, known as the father of Western medicine, refered to it as his "medicine chest." And "In the middle ages elderberry was considered a Holy Tree, capable of restoring good health, keeping good health and as an aid to longevity." (plants.gov)
Even in modern times, before the advent of antibiotics, elderberries played a key role in healing and all parts of the plant were believed to be medicinal and used in treatment for a wide variety of ailments. They were also used as a food source and medicinal by Native American Indians.

Ways To Enjoy Elderberry to Experience the Health Benefits
Key Takeaway
Don't overlook this little tart berry. It is a superfood loaded with health benefits that can help support your entire body. There are many ways to enjoy the goodness of elderberry that can suit your whole family.
I have a friend in my local area who has a wellness company called Bergamot Cove and she makes a wonderful, organic Elderberry Syrup. Every year she goes to Northern Idaho to harvest wild elderberries at the peak of the season when they are the ripest and full of the highest nutritive value and best possible flavor. She makes her syrup in two varieties, one with echinacea for an additional immune system boost, and one without. Each bottle is one pint(16 ounces) of pure goodness! You can learn more about it here. In the video below, Dodi shares more about the benefits of using elderberry as a medicinal for treatment and prevention of common everyday health challenges. If you watch the full video, you'll learn about some other natural medicinals that can help support your immune system.
I asked Dodi why she thought Elderberry has become so popular recently and she said, "I believe it's so trendy now because of people that have been faithful to share the benefits with others either by word of mouth or sharing a bottle with them. Once they see the results, they can't help but do the same. I started making the syrup for my family in 2006, having read about it on the internet, and it was just getting going then. The momentum has finally caught up but Elderberry Syrup has actually been used (on record) for hundreds of years, perhaps thousands. It worked so well as both a preventative and a treatment that we began selling it in our little rural store in North Idaho (formerly Grass Roots Country Store, now known as Bergamot Cove)."
Dodi also shared that "among the many benefits, my 3 favorites of elderberrys' medicinal qualities are that they help boost the immune system, are high in antioxidants and are anti-inflammatory. I believe it's for these 3 assets that help reduce cold and flu symptoms which in turn minimizes the duration. If the syrup contains raw, local honey, then my favorite benefit of that, if used as a daily supplement (in small quantities, once per day), is that it gives you micro exposures to local pollen, thereby helping your body to develop a natural immunity to them over time."
Note: Elderberry Safety
- Be cautious about foraging your own elderberries and eating them fresh. Only the blue and purple berries are edible but the red ones are toxic. It is best to cook the berries.
- If you are being treated for medical conditions or you are on prescription medications, use caution and seek medical advice before using elderberry products just to be safe.
- Also, seek medical advice before using elderberry products if you are pregnant or nursing and for children under the age of one year old.

At the time of me writing this post, it is full on allergy season. It seems like each day as it warms up enough to go outside and start walking again, the rest of the day or the next, we are battling allergies. My husband gets them really bad and usually resorts to various over the counter allergy medications, but unfortunately then he gets wiped out for the day. Even with the non-drowsy choices, my husband can't think as clearly and productivity in his work is diminished. I have been using essential oils and it helps me but my husband is a tougher case. So this week, he is starting on the Elderberry syrup. Hopefully, we will see results and he can get all his creativity and thinking power back. I'll update this post later to share the results.
What about you? Have you used elderberry to support your health in any way? I'd love to hear how you have used it and how it has help you. Please share in the comments.
If you haven't tried it yet, I hope you found this information helpful and you have some ideas of ways you can incorporate elderberry into your life.

I am so excited to be planting an elderberry this year! Thank you for the awesome information! Now I can’t wait for our first harvest!
What an informative post! We love our elderberries in this house. I make elderberry syrup all throughout the fall and winter for sickness prevention and occasionally treatment.
Totally excited I found elderberries growing wild on my parents land. Can’t wait to be harvesting my own that I know hasn’t been sprayed or anything.
