Whether you grow your own garden, you are involved in a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) or you shop regularly from your local farmers market, I’m sure there are times you are looking for ideas to use up the bounty of heirloom tomatoes that come your way.
This year after learning all the benefits of eating seasonally, we decided to do what we could to make sure that happened. We were convinced that our gardening skills, which are none, wouldn’t pay off to reward our efforts so we decided to join a local CSA.
It has been great fun discovering new ways to eat all the varieties of fresh vegetables that have been given to us in our weekly share of the harvest. Many of the vegetables have been new to us so it has been interesting trying them and experimenting with different ways to prepare them.
We love tomatoes and it has always been a regular staple in our diet so I didn’t think it would be a challenge to use up all the tomatoes we were given, but I was wrong. It turns out we were given way more tomatoes than we could possibly ever eat in the way we usually eat them in salads, on sandwiches, etc.
So I have been scouring recipe books and the web looking for some new ideas for using up all our tomatoes before they spoil. I wanted to compile all the ideas and recipes I have found to share with you and also to keep track of for future reference.
Recipes and Ideas for What to Do with Your Heirloom Tomatoes
So far, my favorite new creation with our heirloom tomatoes has been my Rustic Heirloom Tomato Galette recipe which I just posted.
I asked my local farmer what he and his wife are planning on doing with all the extra tomatoes they have because they always have great ideas. They said they were planning on making Tomato Jam. That sounded good to me so I did a little research and found a recipe that I plan to try.
I have found that almost every vegetable we have received in our CSA harvest is absolutely wonderful just roasted in the oven. Plain and simple. So I am going to roast some of my tomatoes and use the suggestions from this post.
Well after I am done trying all these ideas, I am certainly going to run out of tomatoes and wish I had more. I may even want to try growing my own next year.
Well, I hope you enjoy all these ideas and it gives you a good place to start in trying some new ways to make the most of your heirloom tomatoes.
Do you have any favorite ideas and recipes you use with your heirloom tomatoes? I’d love to hear your ideas. Please share in the comments so all can benefit from them.
