I wish I knew then what I know now.
My experience with two children and psychiatric drugs.
Years after losing my son to suicide and then seeing my daughter’s quality of life decline, I knew I had to find a better way than the use of psychiatric drugs. I started doing research, reading books and talking to professionals in the holistic and natural health field. I found out many shocking things that I wish I knew before ever accepting an Rx script from a doctor to treat my child. Let me share with you a few of them to consider before going down this path.
Consider these points.
Psychiatric drugs impede brain development.
Did you know that if you put your child on psych drugs that their developing brains will be numbed and prevented from developing normally? For example, if you start psych drugs on a child of 12 years old, their brain will not mature and develop as they grow up and later they will be an adult with the emotional maturity of age in which they started these drugs. The world will expect them to act like an adult, but they will behave like a child because their young brain never had the chance to develop. Keep in mind that the brain isn’t fully developed until twenty-five years of age. Check this article from Psychology Today to learn more: Do Psychiatric Medications Impair Normal Brain Development?
Long-term psychiatric drug use reduces life expectancy.
Did you know that if your child continues on psych drugs throughout his or her life that they would have a reduced life expectancy of 15-25 years? That is mostly due to the long-term consequences of these drugs and their side effects that lead to weight gain, diabetes, liver failure, kidney failure, and many other health problems. Can you imagine outliving your child because of this? Check out this article from Psychology Today to learn more: Full Disclosure Needed About Psychiatric Drugs That Shorten Life
Psychiatric drugs have severe withdrawal symptoms.
Did you know that psych drugs have severe withdrawal symptoms? My daughter went through over a year of terrible withdrawal symptoms like seizures, vomiting, and headaches along with many other complicated emotional and social challenges. We spent over a year dealing with these problems. Many of them lead to medical testing to rule out any other health issues, which there were none. Every regular medical doctor denied that my daughter’s medical issues were as a result of prescription drug withdrawal even though there was no other explanation. I know better. Here is an informative article from Psychology Today about med withdrawal: Breaking Up with One’s Meds
Psychiatric drugs affect long-term memory.
Did you know that psych drugs affect long-term memory? My daughter has no memory of her childhood and even as far back as a year ago because of being on them. We tend to take this one lightly but think about it. Our memory is one of our most valuable possessions. Why do we not take this one more seriously? It’s not only psych drugs that cause memory loss but even over the counter ones. Read this article, 20 Kinds of Drugs That Cause Memory Loss.
Psychiatric drugs can hinder the quality of life.
Did you know psych drugs will affect your child’s quality of life? My daughter was always groggy and sleepy and didn’t have the energy to accomplish much in life. She had a hard time concentrating and couldn’t read books anymore. That was something that was always her favorite thing to do before she started psych drugs. Depression and anxiety still plagued her which always led to increased meds and increased grogginess. I felt like I had to drag her through life for years because she was so tired all the time. It’s so weird to think I didn’t even realize this was all a result of the drugs. I just figured it was a lack of motivation and drive. It wasn’t until a holistic psychiatrist told me, she was on enough Seroquel to sink a ship, that I began to realize this. Then after weaning her off (slowly, over a year with guidance from this doctor) that she came to life. We got to know a whole new person.
All psychiatric drugs have side effects, the most dangerous being suicidal thoughts and ideation.
I’m sure you know this but you probably just rule it out. You most likely think it is rare and wouldn’t happen to your child. I did hear this before, but I never thought it would affect my child. Surely, that wouldn’t happen because I would keep my child safe, I thought. Well, I am here to say it could happen to your child… it happened to mine. Even with hours of counseling, constant supervision, support and prayer we couldn’t save him. Believe me. We tried everything.
