Do you struggle with finding the perfect gift for your friends and family?
These days, most people buy whatever they want at the touch of a button making it difficult to think of gift ideas that our loved ones don’t already have.
I don’t want to give my loved ones something that will just end up not being used or needed, taken back or heaven forbid in the next garage sale. When I give gifts, I want it to be helpful in some way. A gift that will encourage or lift up the person I am giving it to.
It takes time to think through and plan for a special gift that will hopefully bless the receiver.
I put together a “Meaningful Gifts Planner” that can help you think through each person on your list. You can write out what their likes and dislikes are and what their struggles are. We all have struggles in our lives. Identifying these struggles for your loved one is a step in trying to find solutions for them… things that can help them, encourage them and give them hope.
You can get my “Meaningful Gifts Planner” free from my resource library that is available to all my subscribers. Sign up at the bottom of this post to become a subscriber and get the password for my library.
As a followup to my blog post, How to Handle the Holidays after a Hard Year, I wanted to offer a Gift Giving Guide with ideas for those who are struggling or having a hard time right now.
Therapeutic Gifts to Offer Hope and Encouragement
I have to start with my favorite “go-to” gift I give to friends and family because it has helped me so much. It all started with discovering the benefits of using Joy, an essential oil from Young Living. I wrote a blog post that explains how Joy helps me get through my hard days and how it helped my daughter get through her hard days too.
We later explored ways to make aromatherapy bracelets to be able to wear Joy and our other favorite essential oils, especially on those days you need a little pick me up. It led to us developing a whole line of handcrafted aromatherapy bracelets. They are available on my site HERE and on Etsy. They come in a nice little drawstring gift bag with a small vial of Joy essential oil.
I especially like giving this gift because it is unique, it is handcrafted with love, and it has therapeutic benefits that can help the person I give it to. It is perfect for anyone going through a hard time, a health crisis or struggling with depression, anxiety or grief.
I discovered this diffuser last year at a unique shop in Eugene, Oregon called Urban Therapeutic. I brought two home with me and loved them so much I tried to find more. Thankfully, I was able to find them at a very good price on Amazon. Now I buy them all the time as gifts.
Aromatherapy offers so many benefits for both physical and mental health. I wrote a blog post about Aromatherapy and Mental Health: A Natural Alternative without the Consequences. This post includes a list of different essential oils and the mental health issues they can help improve.
Our whole family uses a diffuser by our beds when we go to sleep. My daughter uses it with Lavender and Frankincense to help with sleep and improve morning brain fog.
My husband and I use it with Thieves, especially during cold and flu season to build immunity and prevent sickness. You can read my post here about using and diffusing Thieves to avoid getting sick.
I recently learned about this sweet woman who had a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for this creative product idea. Her idea was given birth after going through a difficult time in her life. She was so blessed by those in her life that supported and encouraged her during this time that she wanted to do something special to thank them. She asked each one of these special people to share their favorite Bible verse with her. Being a graphic artist by profession, she designed a pack of cards with these verses on them. She also crafted a cute little bag and an easel to display them on.
These gifts were so well received. Her recipients wanted to know where they could get more so they could give them to their friends. The result was the GoFundMe campaign for the development of the Hope Deck. I bought ten Hope Decks during the campaign, and I was hoping and praying it would get funded. YAY, it did! Guess what a lot of people on my list are getting for Christmas?
I love mine and I keep my easel by my computer for encouragement. I switch the verses from time to time and look at them several times each day. It helps me to keep my thoughts on things above and not on the worries of this world. I also love to have these cards handy to jot a note of encouragement to those I think about and pray for. I just pop a postcard stamp on it and drop it in the mail right when I am thinking about it.
Adult coloring books have become popular as a therapeutic tool to soothe and calm anxious thoughts and help relieve depression.
I like how these are individual cards to take out and color, and they include encouraging bible verses to meditate on while coloring the adorable illustrations.
When completed you can post them on the refrigerator, a wall or place on an easel. You can include them in a card or letter, or use them as a bookmark in your bible or a book you are reading.
These are great for teacher gifts, ministry leader gifts, stocking stuffers, contents of a gift box or gift basket.
This is a playing card size box filled with cards that have bible verses and inspirational quotes on them. These cards are beautifully illustrated with bright, appealing colors that are sure to brighten anyone’s day. The lid says it is a Box of Blessings: 51 cards to brighten your day.
Altogether there are 101 Messages to cheer you up when you’re feeling down.
This pack is perfect for the worrier or someone who struggles with anxiety… like half the planet these days. It would make a good stocking stuffer or an addition to a gift box or gift basket.
I think this would also be a great gift to include in a care package to send to a college student before finals week.
Our daughter is getting ready to study abroad, and she has never been away from home or done anything quite this adventurous before. She has a long history of struggling with anxiety, and even though she has overcome most of it, anxiety still rears its ugly head from time to time.
The other night when my husband and I were talking her through some of her fears and anxieties, my husband went to his library of treasured books and brought out a dusty copy of Hinds Feet on High Places and started reading it to her.
It is a creative story of Much-Afraid and her struggles and triumphs in breaking free from the Valley of Humiliation and journeying to the High Places. This story of endurance, persistence, and reliance on God has inspired generations of readers to become sure-footed in their faith- even when facing the rockiest of terrain.
I found this beautifully illustrated version on Amazon which makes for a treasured gift filled with life lessons that can help encourage victory over fear and anxiety and inspire spiritual growth.
When going through a hard time, it is difficult to find the words or even know how to pray. There have been times in my life that I could only find the strength to utter one word in prayer and that is … help! Max Lucado purposely crafted this book for those of us who struggle with finding the right words to pray. He went through the whole bible and condensed the most powerful prayers into simple prayers anyone can pray when they are struggling. He calls them pocket prayers. This little book is small enough to fit in your pocket and so inexpensive it can fit into any budget. The 40 simple prayers in this book promise to bring you to a place of peace and rest.
This book makes a great stocking stuffer, or it can be added to a gift basket. It would also tuck nicely into a Christmas card as a little gift of encouragement.
This practical little book offers simple ways to apply mindfulness techniques to help guide you into the peace of the present moment. It is written by Dr. Patrizia Collard, a leading mindfulness educator. She promises that in just five to ten minutes a day, you can learn to let go of stress, anxiety, and procrastination to ultimately find your path to more energy, joy and an abundant life.
This book includes over 30 easy practices you can implement that will change your life for the better.
The size of this book is perfect for a stocking stuffer or a small gift bag. It also can be included in a gift basket or gift box to round out other meaningful gifts that offer hope and encouragement.
The 52 Lists for Happiness is a beautiful journal with prompts that will get you started making 52 lists of things that bring you happiness. It promises to inspire positivity, balance, and joy.
Women often push aside the things that make them most happy in order to love and serve their families. It is easy to lose sight of what it is that really makes them happy.
I came to a point years ago that I adopted a motto for myself which is “Do more of what makes you happy.” The problem is after years of putting everyone else first, I didn’t even know what that was. It has been a process to discover these things.
I wish I found this journal years ago. It certainly would have made this process of self-discovery and the path to happiness a lot easier.
This Carlie Cute Cat Glass Cup is just one of those silly little things that make you smile. How can you remain gloomy while drinking a cup of tea from this glass cup?
Actually, it is quite practical with the fish being a strainer for tea leaves, the cat head is a lid to keep your tea warm, the tail is the handle, while the base works as a coaster to protect your tables from burns.
I’m sure this is one gift you can be pretty sure your recipient doesn’t already have.
This Tea Forte Single Steeps of tea leaves is a perfect addition to the Carlie Cute Cat Glass Cup.
The Winter Collection is a warming selection of teas for the season, including Rum Raisin Biscotti, Harvest Apple Spice, Spiced Plum, Sweet Orange Spice and Winter Chai. There are 15 Single Steep Pouches in this box.
A quote inside the lid of the box says “Winter’s day follows winter’s night, crisp and cold, no matter. My cup of tea brings warming joy.”
Himalayan Salt Lamps have many therapeutic benefits including boosting mood and promoting sleep.
They are also good for purifying the air by removing pollutants, allergens, mold, and bacteria.
Surprisingly they also reduce electromagnetic radiation and airborne infection as well as easing asthma and allergy symptoms.
We like these lamps, not only for the health benefits but also for the soft light it has in a dark room, making it the perfect night light to be able to see if you have to move around your room in the dark.
My daughter used this to be able to see during late night feedings with her newborn baby.
In our family, we are all big fans of fluffy blankets. Each one of us has our own, and it travels with us from the bedroom to the living room where we cuddle up to watch tv or have one of our “coffee talks.”
Nothing is more comforting than a cozy blanket. This one has the added benefit of having so many positive, uplifting words all over it.
The description on Amazon says this plush blanket offers healing thoughts, warm hugs, and positive energy. This blanket comes in a variety of color options as well.
I am known to give plush blankets to anyone who I find out is deprived of knowing how wonderfully comforting they can be.
Putting some of the items mentioned above into a cheerful box can make for a super special and meaningful gift to offer hope and encouragement.
Taking the time to put thoughtful gifts together into a beautiful presentation can make the recipient feel so loved and special.
Many of the gift ideas mentioned above are $5.00 or less so you can put together four or five of these items and still be under budget.
Baskets are still a popular way to deliver thoughtful gifts with an eye appealing presentation that makes anyone feel special.
I bet you can even find some extra baskets lying around somewhere that you aren’t using.
You can spray paint them or fix them up with a pretty new bow and now you have the perfect way of delivering meaningful gifts to those you care about.
I hope this gives you some ideas for gifts you can give that are meaningful and offer hope and encouragement.
Don’t forget to grab a copy of my “Meaningful Gifts Planner” to help you brainstorm thoughtful gift ideas for those you love and care about.
